Create a Better Wardrobe with Fewer Pieces

Let’s talk about versatility!
The key to building a wardrobe that works together is knowing how to mix and match basic and statement pieces to make multiple outfits.
Your basics are very important. A basic is anything used to make a base canvas - that white pocket tee, your favorite jeans, or a solid colored jacket such as a black blazer or a denim jacket. For the most part, a basic will never go out of style. What I mean by this is if you invest in a nice black blazer today, you’ll be able to wear it forever and won’t have to worry about it not being on-trend next season. It will always have a place in your wardrobe.
*When you buy these pieces you want them to last. Think about them as an investment - you may spend more on them than other things in your closet, but you’ll also wear them more often than other things in your closet.
A statement piece is anything that takes your outfit from a basic look to a head turner. Think about that printed skirt or colorful cardigan in your closet, those are great examples of statement pieces. You need both, great basics and statement pieces, to create a functional wardrobe that doesn’t feel mundane.
While we Love (with a capital L!) a basic outfit for your average Tuesday, it’s important to throw on a fun outfit a couple times a week. If you know how to mix and match the pieces that are in your closet, you’ll be able to pull off a combination of basic and fun outfits every week.
To show an example of how to stretch your wardrobe, I chose 6 items, 3 basics and 3 statement pieces, to create 12 different looks.
Think about how you can apply this strategy to items that are already in your closet. Maybe you need to add a couple basics to make some of your outfits work?
