How to Pull Off those Printed Items Hanging in Your Closet
BLC Style Tip #4 - How to Wear Prints
Are you afraid of prints? If you answered yes, you’re not alone! Prints can be scary if you don’t have a solid idea of how to wear them and we’ve found that most people tend to avoid printed clothing all together to ensure they don’t stand out too much. But, we’re here to tell you that it’s time to pull that printed blouse out of your closet and wear it!
Here are 4 tips to help you pull off prints:
1. Dip your toes into the prints pool by keeping the pop small. Opt for a pair of printed shoes, a printed clutch or shoulder bag, or a fun hair accessory. Then, create a very basic outfit with neutral pieces. Think your favorite denim, a white tee, and a leather jacket. After you have that base on, a cheetah print crossbody wallet will do wonders! Add some lipstick and walk out the door!
Do you need a put-together look for work? We love a printed blouse for the office - wearing one shows confidence and assertiveness. If you like the idea of this, but still feel like a printed top isn’t really your style, then the next tip will help you tone down your look.
2. Tone a printed top down by adding a top layer. What we mean here is a neutral jacket or cardigan. Think a black or brown leather jacket, a blazer, a denim jacket, or any solid colored cardigan. Here are outfit formulas for the different office dress codes: A pencil skirt or black pants + a printed blouse + a neutral blazer or cardigan = Business Professional Outfit Clean dark wash or black denim + a printed blouse + a leather jacket, blazer, or cardigan = Business Casual Dress Code Favorite denim + printed top or blouse + denim jacket, leather jacket or cardigan = Casual Dress Code
Now that we’ve covered the printed blouse, let’s cover the printed everything else…
3. When wearing a printed item, keep everything else neutral. What do I wear with a printed __________? (insert item hidden in the back of your closet that you don’t know how to wear here) The answer? Neutral basics. If you want to wear a printed skirt, pair it with a solid tank and a denim jacket. If you want to wear a printed bomber jacket, pair it with jeans and a solid tee shirt. If you want to wear a printed dress, pair it with a solid jacket and neutral accessories.
Ready to get called up to the print big leagues? The next tip is about mixing prints!
4. When mixing prints, make sure your prints are two different size scales and have at least one color in common. Think a skinny-striped print top paired with a large-scale floral print skirt. This way the two prints accent each other instead of fighting with each other. Also, the two prints should pull at least one color from the other. For example if the floral print skirt has some blue in it, then look for that same shade of blue in the stripe top you’re pairing with it. Now, this is a lot going on! So, if you aren’t totally confident about the look, refer back to Tip #2 and add a neutral top layer such as a denim jacket.
